One’s complement

One's complement

The one’s complement of a binary bit is $$ \begin{aligned} 0 &\rightarrow 1 \\ 1 &\rightarrow 0 \end{aligned} $$

We can use one’s complement to get its negative representation.

The MSB of a one’s complement number is a sign bit. Positive numbers start with a $0$ and negative numbers will start with a $1$.

Advantages:

• Addition using one’s complement is easy.

Disadvantages:

• There are still two representations of $0$. Positive zero byte: $00000000$. Negative zero byte: $11111111$.
